SHAPE America and Dove Self Esteem Project have partnered to bring a free middle school self esteem program to health and PE teachers across the US. It’s been implemented in 100 countries, but never in the US until now.
When kids aren’t body confident, they are less likely to participate in PE, raise their hand in class or engage in activities they truly enjoy. This program addresses analyzing the appearance ideals we are bombarded with, helps kids use refusal skills to resist those negative influences and create healthy body image.
As a former middle school health teacher, and one of 17 that wrote the 2006 National Health Education Standards and provided input on the HECAT for CDC, I can assure you, this is a strong program. Health and/or PE teachers may implement. There is a single-session and 5-session program. You can find both programs here:
Incentives if Implemented:
Any middle school health or PE teacher in your state may implement. If they teach either one (1 session or 5 session) by Dec 15, 2016 and contact samantha@cairnguidance.com, their name gets placed into a drawing. 9 lucky teachers will be selected to win in December, 2016.
Want to empower your students and build a healthier school and community? Here’s your chance!
Join fellow educators, administrators and other community members who share your passion for health and wellness at the interactive 2016 Fuel Up to Play 60 Program Advisor Training Camp.

A very common question we hear is why we should host a Jump Rope or Hoop for Heart in our schools. Is there more to it than just the fundraising aspect of it? The answer is absolutely yes. While we as PE teachers regularly see the envelopes, the ducks-this year its the Zoo Crew, we often don’t see the result of those envelopes. If you are trying to convince your administrator the importance of this program, here is some critical information to share on how our efforts affect our community.
For more information on what the American Heart Association has to offer us as educators, please take a look at their Education page.
As our school year is rapidly approaching, we hope that you will take this opportunity to plan a Jump Rope or Hoop for Heart event at your school. As you can see from the American Heart Association’s mission in North Dakota, they are making huge strides in supporting our communities. If there was ever an organization that we see results from, this is definitely a great example.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us and we will either put you in touch with Mary Reiser, our AHA rep, or a teacher with Jump Rope or Hoop for Heart experience to get you started!
NDSHAPE would like to thank all of these schools and their coordinators for hosting a Jump Rope or Hoop for Heart during the 2015-2016 school year. Not only are you raising money for a great cause, but you are also educating your students about the importance of heart health. We would also like to give a shout out to Mary Reiser, our American Heart Association Youth Representative. Your efforts provide our schools with the resources they need to hold a successful event!

The NFL Foundation doubled down on its commitment to youth health and wellness with an additional $1.5 million to provide an additional 4,000 NFL FLAG Essentials Kits to Fuel Up to Play 60 schools nationwide as part of its long-standing partnership with Fuel Up to Play 60 and GENYOUth. This is in addition to the $1 million the NFL invested last year that supported Fuel Up to Play 60 and FLAG.
This renewed commitment brings dynamic student activity programming to even more schools to help millions of students be more physically active. FLAG helps students and educators in elementary and middle schools get active both inside and outside the school building before, during and after school by offering resources, recognition and curriculum to help kids get 60 minutes of physical activity a day. In fact, 98 percent of educators reported using the Kits throughout the school year.
Click here to apply for a Fuel Up To Play 60 NFL FLAG Essential Kit for your school. Deadline is June 10th.

Earlier this month, we celebrated a huge legislative milestone when Congress passed the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) — the long overdue reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. This historic event — the result of advocacy efforts led by SHAPE America, its affiliates, members and supporters — opens new funding opportunities for school health and physical education. |
